Any home, auto or business insurance policyholder in Canada who has a concern or dispute with a General Insurance OmbudService (GIO) member company (list of member companies) can take advantage of our services. The majority of complaints we deal with centre around claims, interpretation of policy coverage, policy processing and handling.
Unfortunately, we are not able to assist with complaints about life, health or disability insurance matters. If you have an issue with a life, health or disability provider, you may contact the ‘Consumer Assistance’ centre at the Canadian Life and Health Insurance OmbudService at www.clhio.ca.
Similarly, we do not handle complaints related to the cost or availability of insurance. Nor are we in a position to handle matters that have been (or currently are) before the courts.
We do, however, specialize in resolving consumer complaints with home, auto and business insurance providers.
In Alberta only, GIO helps policyholders resolve complaints about auto premiums, in accordance with provincial legislation
